'Soul Train' Creator Don Cornelius Dead of Suicide

Don Cornelius creator of the TV show “Soul Train,” has died after suffering a gunshot wound at his home in Sherman Oaks, Calif. Wednesday morning. He was 75.

Don Cornelius was pronounced dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at 4:56 a.m. at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, said Los Angeles County Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter.

Cornelius hosted the long-running dance show, “Soul Train,” from 1971 until 1993. The show continued until 2006.

In the VH1 documentary, “Soul Train: The Hippest Trip in America,” Cornelius said in the late 1960s, television “was a medium that didn’t feature minorities in a positive way. It bothered me personally…I had a burning desire to see black people presented on television in a positive light.” He was inducted into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame in 1995 and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, said in 2006 he remained grateful to the musicians who made “Soul Train” the destination for the best and latest in black music.

He was excited about a movie he was developing about "Soul Train." Cornelius stopped hosting the show in 1993, and “Soul Train” ceased production in 2006.
